NJ Concussion Awareness Day is this Friday, September 15th. Let's talk about baseline testing...

Why do baseline testing for concussion?

September is here which means a lot of fall sports are beginning!

While the joy of watching our kids is at the forefront of our minds, it’s also important to remember that several of these contact sports (including football, soccer, cheer, and volleyball) can put our kids at risk for concussive injury. Because of this risk, it is important to take the appropriate steps now to optimize concussion management in the event that your athlete does sustain a concussive injury. This includes baseline testing.

Most post injury tests will give results that they can compare to "age-matched peers" but it's best to know how the individual performs before an injury takes place so that after an injury, the rehabilitation team knows when the person is truly "back to themselves" by comparing post-injury scores to pre-injury scores. That's why it is so important to test an individual to get their score to compare against. It's like insurance - you take it and hope you don't need it later 🙂.
